Netsuke
The artist's work in this traditional Japanese artform focuses on naturalistic renditions of animal and plant forms.
Combined with an ensemble consisting of Netsuke (a toggle), Ojime (a retaining bead), and Inro (a medicine box) or Tonkatzu (a tobacco box), the netzuke completes a set often reflecting subtle expressions seasonal and life-form affiliations.
The traditional carving materials preferred include; boxwood, wild cherry, ebony, fosssil ivory and antler. Many appropriate woods have been collected by the artist over the years. Some of these include; yew, mountain mahagony, wild lilac burl, bay laurel and variety of fine grained fruitwoods, such as fig, plum, apple, pear and chokecherry.
Some of the pieces and sets are works in progress. |
